This App Will Change The Way You

Think About Going To The Doctor

WE HAVE A MILLION AND A HALF PLACES TO BE AND THINGS TO TAKE CARE OF (DON’T YOU?). WHEN IT COMES TO SITTING AND WAITING IN A DOCTOR’S WAITING ROOM, WE’LL PASS.

Don’t worry. There’s an app for that. Whether it’s for a quick consultation, pregnancy support or a therapy session, Maven has an entire network of specialists that are waiting to see you – via video appointment. No more long waits. No need to leave the house when you feel beyond gross and have kids in tow to boot. You don’t have to see a doctor you don’t like just because of location. In a nutshell: here’s how you can win when it comes to health care. Read on to hear why Maven CEO Kate Ryder started the app and how she’s changing the health scene for women.

HOW DID MAVEN COME ABOUT?
During my 20s and early 30s, I witnessed first-hand just how many gaps there are in healthcare for women. Even as a college student, if you need birth control, you need to navigate the health system independently in a way that is entirely unique to women. This happens again when you start confronting pregnancy, child birth, and early motherhood. Nothing really prepares you for these experiences, but they are complex and can be confusing/frightening. A lot of what’s needed isn’t formal care — but rather someone to talk to, who can answer basic questions, who can help you understand if what you are going through is normal. This is especially true when it’s so easy to Google your symptoms and misdiagnose yourself with some horrible disease.
Whenever this happened to me, I would instantly call up my Aunt Candyce, who is a doctor, and ask basic questions or get basic prescriptions. Why shouldn’t everyone have instant access to an Aunt Candyce? That’s why I started Maven.
WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON?
Most basically, Maven is a platform that enables women to “Facetime,” on-demand, with really brilliant, heavily-vetted health and wellness providers. I think our number one goal this year has to be every woman knowing about our product and trying it out.
IF YOU COULD GIVE A NEW MAMA ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Download Maven while youre still pregnant because youll be too tired to even download an app after the baby is born (sorry, shameless plug!).

“Theres no reason to be Googling in the middle of the night when you can talk to someone who works with postpartum women every day and can give you peace of mind in 10 minutes.”

WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO CHANGE ABOUT HEALTHCARE WITH MAVEN?
Is everything an acceptable answer?
Medicine has become so transactional, and Maven is focused on relationship-driven care. Especially during the prenatal/postpartum period, a great success for us is a woman who books a couple of appointments with a doula, nutritionist, midwife, and/or OB/GYN before she gives birth, then has one or two appointments with a lactation consultant and women’s health physical therapist after birth, and then maybe is experiencing the baby blues or actual postpartum depression and she reaches out to one of our mental health specialists  healthcare that supports a woman on multiple fronts, especially through big transitions in her life. I dont think the current healthcare system achieves that at all.

WHAT’S THE ONE THING THAT YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO LEARN…BUT HAVEN’T MASTERED YET?
I want to learn how to fly an airplane.
