Wisdom from your mother…

My mom is an educator who has dedicated her entire life to helping others. She’s had an unwavering commitment to improving both student and teacher experiences for over 40 years. Her best advice – to this day – is to make service part of your everyday life, whether in the classroom or an office. Her example has influenced me personally and professionally, as social responsibility has been a core tenet of Parachute from the very beginning. We donate all returned items to Habitat for Humanity, and we partner with the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing but Nets Campaign to send life-saving malaria-prevention bed nets to those in need. We’ve donated over 30,000 bed nets so far! Building a business is more rewarding when you’re also making a meaningful contribution.

Memory of your mom’s favorite self-care routine?

My mom taught me that a hot shower or bath at night helps loosen muscles, reduce tension and eliminate toxins, all which help the body ease into superior sleep. These before-bed preparations are a ritual for me to this day.

As an adult, what do you cherish from your mom?

My mom established her own business, which I think influenced me from a young age. Her confidence and entrepreneurial spirit inspired me to strike out on my own, and her steady leadership through ups and downs is something I emulate to this day.

Advice to your younger self…

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Knowing your weaknesses is just as important as knowing your strengths – if not more.

Daily routine?

I have a few basic bedtime rituals to ensure I get a good night’s sleep. I try to minimize portions close to bedtime and cut back on caffeine and spicy foods late in the day. As bedtime nears, I drink a cup of chamomile tea to relax.

In the morning, I make it a priority to get up early and meditate. Sitting for 20 minutes makes a huge difference in how I approach life and manage tense situations. I also find that I am much more productive on days where I exercise and eat a good breakfast before work. Starting the day right keeps me energized and focused!
