For the maiden voyage of HATCH’s ambassador program, we wanted women from far and wide with different voices and talents. New mama and food stylist Cynthia Chen brings the same rich and unique flare to fashion as she does to food. Featured here in a tender moment with her little one wearing our Airplane Cardi, this mama is a standout on our scene.
HATCH/How would you describe your personal style?
Cynthia/I prefer pared down, laidback styles that are easygoing but still refined; my favorite are clothes that are modern but not too trendy, with a classic bent that will let me get the most out of my wardrobe.
HATCH/What inspires you when picking out your outfit in the morning?
Cynthia/Something that’s easy to throw on but looks put together, with a little contrast for interest, like silk against distressed jeans, or a slouchy tee paired with a structured blazer. These days, I love anything that has a nice loose drape, that has easy access for breastfeeding but still makes me feel graceful (especially in adjusting to this new postpartum body!
HATCH/Hardest part of dressing while pregnant?
Cynthia/Finding clothing that wasn’t either empire-waist and baby doll, which made me feel oddly childlike, or tight and body-conscious, which in turn made me feel a little too exposed. It felt like there was little out there that fit in with how I dressed pre-pregnancy, or that felt modern and classic — until I found HATCH!
HATCH/What’s the best style advice you’ve ever received? Don’t be afraid to invest in a few quality pieces that you really love and that will last; you’ll feel amazing every time you wear them.
Cynthia/What would say the style vibe of your town? I’m new to LA, but so far it strikes me as breezy, bohemian, and eclectic.
HATCH/What are your favorite brands for baby?
Cynthia/I love Baby GAP for soft, high-quality multi-packs of onesies and pants in neutrals and grays (my favorite scheme for everything) for easy mix-and-match; Tippy & Toes for breezy, comfortable muslin swaddle blankets in understated and beautiful designs; Aden & Anais for the the softest, silkiest Bamboo Dream Blanket, which is our absolute favorite for daytime naps.
HATCH/Can you walk us through your morning beauty ritual?
Cynthia/I do embarrassingly little these days, but when I remember, my essentials are a Smashbox BB cream for a little SPF and color, a NARS blush, and Revlon liquid eyeliner.
HATCH/How does HATCH help dressing the bump?
Cynthia/HATCH doesn’t sacrifice style for function (or vice versa!) and makes dressing the bump, and even my postpartum body, feel celebratory and lovely — every bit as beautiful as the experience should be. I wore the HATCH Dahlia dress to work through the majority of my pregnancy and it accommodated my growing body but still made me feel feminine and graceful.
HATCH/3 things you can’t live without in your closet?
Cynthia/(1) A super soft, slouchy tee, (2) a long necklace, (3) a good pair of skinny jeans.
