Haute Mama

Chloe Schama

WHEN IT COMES TO LIVING A WELL ROUNDED LIFE, WE HAVE TO SAY THAT OUR NEWEST HAUTE MAMA, CHLOE SCHAMA SEEMS TO KNOW A THING OR TWO.

As the online executive editor of Elle Magazine, Chloe’s resume is stacked not with the usual fashion pedigree, but with her novel “Wild Romance,” The New Republic (where she worked prior to Elle), The Guardian and The New York Sun. Though Chloe dreams of cutting blooms as a florist, we think her life as-is  is pretty…er…dreamy. We got a chance to speak with her about daily essentials, dressing for her (second!) bump and what qualities she hopes to pass on to her kids.
THE BEST THING IN MY CLOSET IS…
My Agnes B. Dress collection. I basically aspire to look like a picnicking Parisian woman at all times.
I HOPE MY CHILD INHERITS MY…
Determination
PRE-BUMP DRESSING VS. DURING-BUMP DRESSING MEANS…
Giving up on crop tops and high-waisted pants…embracing tulip-cuts and tunic-length blouses and dark colors.

MY TOP 3 ‘DOS’ FOR PREGNANCY DRESSING ARE…
1/ Wear your regular clothes as long as you can, but know when the moment has passed
2/ Pay attention to fabric; nothing is worse than wearing something that feels disposable just because it’s labelled “maternity”
3/ Buy yourself some nice things that you’ll be able to wear after pregnancy as well. This Gary Graham coat is at the top of that list for me.
HATCH MAKES ME FEEL…
Good about my changing body.
SOMETIMES I THINK MY LIFE’S CALLING IS…
To be a florist. In DC, where I used to live there was a flower shop that sold half-priced cut-flowers on Friday afternoons. I never missed it.
MY CREATIVE ZONE IS…
In the pool. Something about the meditative state of swimming laps shakes loose the ideas that have been hiding.
SOMETHING YOU PROBABLY DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME IS…
Plenty! My Instagram is private; I haven’t posted a photo on Facebook in years. I do like Twitter, though.

FIVE THINGS YOU’LL ALWAYS FIND IN MY BAG ARE…
1/Lip balm. Dry lips are a particular kind of torture.
2/A Moleskine notebook. I take Joan Didion’s words in “On Keeping a Notebook” to heart: “See enough and write it down, I tell myself, and then some morning when the world seems drained of wonder, some day when I am only going through the motions of doing what I am supposed to do, which is write — on that bankrupt morning I will simply open my notebook and there it will all be, a forgotten account with accumulated interest, paid passage back to the world out there …”
3/Bose In-Ear Noise Canceling Headphones: I’m obsessed with podcasts. These are the best for drowning out the subway roar without cranking up the volume to eardrum-damaging levels.
4/I used to say a book, but now it’s just my iPhone, where my books and audiobooks live.
5/Red lipstick
I CAN’T LEAVE MY HOUSE BEFORE…
Spritzing with Annik Goutal Eud de Sud.
THE ONE BEAUTY PRODUCT I SWEAR BY IS…
Lancome moisturizerMy mother turned me on to all things Lancome far too early in life. I remain a devotee.

My family has rented a house in Todi for the summer for a few years. This past summer we skipped it, and I’m missing it. My best friend took this picture of me with baby number one–post swim, pre-Campari. I want to introduce baby number two to this kind of magical Umbrian light.
MY SPIRIT ANIMAL IS…
Is it too saccharine to say my dog? He’s neurotic and contains multitudes.
