AS IF CLOSET ENVY WASN’T ENOUGH, WE HAVE MAJOR BEAUTY CABINET ENVY FOR OUR NEWEST HAUTE MAMA, JULIA SLOAN.
As Vice President of Global Communications and Fashion Relations at NARS, being on a first name basis with François Nars himself, having bins of beauty products, and a closet filled with the best brands, is just the norm. Already mama to 2 year old boy/girl twins Matisse and Olimpia, Julia is due in June with babe #3. In between traveling for fashion week shows, we caught up with Julia to talk trends, pregnancy must-haves and what beauty product she can’t live without.
DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE IN 6 WORDS OR LESS.
Modern and feminine.
HOW HAS YOUR FASHION SENSE CHANGED SINCE BABY (OR SINCE YOU GOT PREGNANT)?
My style hasn’t changed much during pregnancy. I’ve been able to wear a lot of favorites from my closet, specifically from Alexander Wang, Acne and Marni — I just had to lose the belts.
MOTHER/CHILD MATCHING, YEA OR NAY?
The only matching I do is with pajamas for my twins (especially during the holidays — there’s nothing cuter)!
WHAT 3 TRAITS ARE YOU HOPING YOUR CHILD INHERITS FROM YOU?
My twins have already inherited a lot of my traits – most notably, my love of accessories (that’s a trait, right?)! They’re also very talkative and outgoing.
WHAT 3 TRENDS ARE YOU CURRENTLY LOVING?
I love that the wrap/poncho is having a real moment — perfect for a bump. I am also a big fan of a good shirtdress and a jumpsuit (I’m currently coveting the HATCH Cashmere Onesie!)
WHAT PRE-PARENT FASHION TREND DO YOU HOPE MAKES A COMEBACK IN YOUR CLOSET SOMEDAY?
That would have to be those belts from Marni and Acne. And my Erdem dresses – they are a tighter fit. I can’t wait to pull them out of my closet again!
WHAT BAG ARE YOU CURRENTLY CARRYING?
I usually go between my Balenciaga Gold City (03), my Givenchy Nightingale and my trusty NARS tote on the weekend. Since I’ve had the kids, my bags keep growing exponentially. I now need to fit trucks, dolls, and snacks — snacks are essential!
IF YOU COULD ONLY KEEP 5 THINGS IN YOUR BAG FOR YOU AND BABY/CHILD, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Lucas’ Papaw Ointment (01)— it has so many uses and applications. I use it as lip balm, diaper cream, dry skin salve, blister ointment, everything. I can’t live without it!
Dépanneur in Brooklyn stocks the BEST chocolate milk from Battenkill Creamery (02)— the whole family loves it.
iPad (04)— when boredom strikes (for me or the kids) I like to be prepared. My favorite app is Youtube for the kids and I love reading the New York Times and WWD in the mornings on my way to the office.
Harmless Harvest Raw Coconut Water (05)— another beverage, but children are always thirsty and this coconut water is a healthy choice that I can feel good about.
We love Nourish Snacks. They’re individually sized and I can pull them out when I’m in back-to-back meetings with no time for lunch or when the kids need a pick-me-up during an afternoon of running errands. My favorite is the Coconuts For You! (06)
WHERE WAS YOUR LAST VACATION? KIDS OR KID-FREE?
My last vacation was with my husband (without the kids) in Lake Placid. The Lake Placid Lodge, where we stay, is incredibly serene, beautiful, and secluded. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind — and sleep in! The service is fantastic and the team there really takes care of you. And the breakfast is such a treat — my regular was the hot chocolate and granola. I still dream about it.
TOP 3 ‘DOS’ FOR DRESSING DURING PREGNANCY.
BE CONFIDENT! This is an exciting time and you get to show off your bump! Don’t cover yourself in large, oversized clothing — wear tighter fits and show off your new body.
INVEST IN KEY MATERNITY PIECES. It’s so easy now to buy pieces that work for during and after pregnancy, so I don’t typically buy many maternity items. Instead, I try to work with my current wardrobe and adapt with a few key pieces that I splurge on. Depending on the time of year, this could be a great pair of maternity jeans or a few dresses. Treat yourself — you’ll wear them often during a time when you want to feel your best.
GET INSPIRED. Try new things and seek inspiration from everywhere — blogs, magazines or friends. Tap into your mommy network and ask what their favorites are — you never know where you’ll get new ideas.
