The HATCH Mamas That Feed Us

The HATCH Mamas That Feed Us

A destination for chefs, NYC’s innovative food landscape is filled with some of the best eats in the world. As of late, a new crop of female foodies and mama makers are hitting the scene.

In celebration of our latest collection, we feasted with a few of the female founder’s from our favorite eateries —fast-casual vegan hotspot ByChloe., fresh-food vending machine concept Fresh Bowl, chef Eden Eats, and the bringer of sweet treats Dana’s Bakery—whom actively contribute to the tastes of NYC. Both preggers and not, we hung out (and ate), in style, chatting about mamahood, pregnancy & food (obvi!) in easy, breezy pieces from our latest assortment.

EDEN GRINSHPAN @edeneats

Host of Top Chef Canada, and the girl behind that highly Instagrammed pizza pregnant shot—you know, the one with the slices stacked on her belly— and mom to Ayv, shares her craziest craving and a go-to mom kitchen hack, while in the midst of authoring her first cookbook.

What’s cooking ?

Working on editing my manuscript for my first book and tweaking recipes. It comes out fall 20/20. Plus, I have my Yogurt and Sour Cream Cheesecake baking right now.

Craziest dish you’ve ever had?

Balut- it’s a fertilized duck embryo egg. Woah.

Wildest craving?

Butter rolled in sugar…I mean that’s legit 😉

First food memory?

That’s a hard one. Probably, Sunday brunch with my family, noodles with milk & sugar (loved that one mom), and white toast smothered in butter.

Ayv’s favorite thing to eat?

Raisins, seaweed, popcorn, and all the fruit. All the fruit.

First thing Ayv ever ate?

Sweet potato

Salty or sweet?

Used to be sweet, but now I’m salty.

Drink of choice?

Wine 🙂

Most overrated food trend?

Celery juice. It’s a joke

Best kitchen hack for a new mom?

Big batch everything! Leftovers are your BFF.

Best thing about being a mom?

Everything

Hardest thing about being a mom?

Mom guilt, sleep deprivation, and worrying for the rest of my life.

SAM WASSER @eatbychloe

Founder and creative director of our vegan obsession ByChloe. (basically everything we want to eat all the time) and mom to James shares what’s cooking plus the the pros and cons of mom hood.

What’s cooking?

We just launched a smoked Carrot Hotdog for by CHLOE with Harry & Ida, which features a whole smoked carrot! I am obsessed with the creative for the Carrot Dog which stars Kobayashi, the World’s Greatest Competitive Eater, bedazzled buns, google eyes and my hands (claim to fame!) with nine-inch nails from Nails by Mei. The images are so fun and weird, which fits by CHLOE. perfectly.

Craziest dish you have ever eaten?

I’m embarrassed to say I am not a very adventurous eater 🙁 Not the “craziest” but one of my most favorite memorable was at Ca Na Toneta in Caimari, a small village in the Tramuntana mountain range in Mallorca. The tiny restaurant is run by two incredibly talented sisters who created unique dishes from local and ecologically produced ingredients from their families farm. The tomato tartare from the plant-based tasting menu we had was truly incredible.

James’ favorite thing to eat?

I recently started feeding Jamesy fruit and veggie purees. I love Yumi, which is an organic, nutritious, and fresh delivery service that comes right to your door every week. It’s a total time-saver, and the ingredients are always so fun.

Salty or sweet?

Can’t I have it all? Dark chocolate sea salt anyone?

Most overrated food trend?

Bubble Tea

Best kitchen hack for a new mom?

Toss up between the Upang Sterilizer, which no joke, I throw everything into & The Baby Brezza Formula Pro which is the Keurig for preparing bottle!

Best thing about being a mom?

Getting to see the world all over again thru James’ eyes.

Hardest thing about being a mom?

Trying to balance it all and quickly realizing there is no such thing as balance. I think the hardest thing for me is the pressure I place on myself to be everything to everyone (work and family alike). I am actively trying to be easier on myself and know that I’m trying my best.

CHLOE VICHOT @myfreshbowl

Founder of new vending machine concept FreshBowl (can we hear it for salads in reusable glass jars packed with healthy produce and sweet treats! Bc need a salad quick-like? Yup!) shares what she’s most excited about becoming a mama, plus what she’s craving these days.

What’s cooking?

Nothing right now. However, I just ate avocado toast with sardines.

Craziest dish you have ever made?

Navarin d’agneau, was my favorite dish to cook after attending cooking school.

Craziest dish you have ever eaten?

Snake or chicken feet in Hong Kong.

Craving while pregnant?

Dairy mainly and tomatoes with mozzarella (often).

Favorite thing to eat?

So many things! My favorite meal would be foie gras, with roasted chicken and mashed potatoes, plus cheese & bread for dessert.

First food memory?

Cake with my grandfather

Salty or sweet?

Both

First thing you want to eat post-baby?

Steak tartare

Best kitchen hack for a new mom?

I will tell you in a month 🙂

Most excited about becoming a mom?

To hold him/her tight and smell my baby’s head.

Most nervous about becoming a mom?

Not knowing what to do and how to calm him/her.

DANA POLLACK @danasbakery

Founder of our guiltiest, yummiest pleasure, Dana’s Bakery shares what she’s most excited about becoming a mama (again), plus how she manages momming & CEO-ing.

What’s cooking?

Currently (35 weeks pregnant) nothing, I’m just too busy or tired by the time I get home from work or put (my daughter) Leni to bed. However, I AM loving PB&J and grilled cheese sandwiches. Fancy, I know.

Craziest dish you have ever made?

Dana’s Bakery specializes in French Macarons and Cookies in fun (unique) American flavors… I think the craziest custom macaron flavors we’ve ever made were: Cool Ranch Dorito, Ranch Salad Dressing for Heinz and perfume “flavored” to match the new release of a Victoria Secret perfume!

Craziest dish you have ever eaten?

Not to toot my own horn, BUT, the Chocolate chip MOOKIE may be the best thing I have ever tasted. It is a molten chocolate macaron baked inside a soft, chewy chocolate chip cookie. Did I mention the cookie has four different types of chocolate chips and is also gluten-free?

Wildest craving?

I am one of those people who already drink pickle juice and eat lemons on the regular, so I would say what might be someone else’s “wild craving” Is just another everyday flavor to me.

Craving while pregnant?

For both pregnancies its been grilled cheese and black & white milkshakes. Cream cheese on pretty much anything, or by itself on a spoon. Ice cream both pregnancies.

Favorite thing to eat?

SUSHI and a dirty martini (so soon!!). Pizza (preferably Dominos thin crust) and dessert. Cakes and cookies are my fave – figures one day I would end up in the bakery business!

First food memory?

This may not be the first, but certainly the most memorable…baking with my grandma when she would come to visit from Israel — specifically making rugelach and cheese bourekas.

What is your mini’s favorite thing to eat?

We’re lucky Leni is a good eater, she loves food like her mom. She eats a healthy balanced diet but also inherited my sweet tooth. Savory foods: Turkey meatballs, avocado, pasta, and cheese. Sweet foods: “mommy’s” rainbow black and white cookies and ice pops.

Salty or sweet?

SWEET! All the way.

First thing you want to eat post-baby?

SUSHI and Dirty Martini

Most overrated food trend?

LARGE overindulgent food creations for the sole purpose of getting a reaction on Instagram – NOT for the love of food or flavor. No one loves a little food porn more than me, but I see way too many companies trying to outdo each other with the largest, grossest, over-indulgent mash-up creations.

Late night craving?

Grapefruit juice and crackers. No matter how much water I drink, I’m incredibly thirsty at night, so I end up drinking a ton of water before bed. Then I don’t sleep well because I have to pee every couple of hours!

Best kitchen hack for a new mom?

Don’t take that freezer for granted! You can cook or bake almost anything in large batches and then freeze individual portions, so meal prep is done ahead of time. Soups, grilled meat, muffins, homemade pancakes… they all freeze VERY well. I take mine out the night before so that it can thaw in the fridge, and I don’t need a microwave to heat it up. I am not a fan of the microwave and only use it when absolutely necessary.

Best thing about being a mom?

Such a hard question, there are many things (most of them cliché but true)! I never imagined I could love someone as much and as selflessly as I do Leni. What blows my mind is that we are about to have another. Two children. Is that much love even possible?! It’s wild to see the process happen before your very eyes, it has given me a whole new perspective and appreciation for life AND my relationship with my mother. All the times she used to say “when you’re a mother you’ll understand” I NOW understand.

Hardest thing about being a mom?

Time management. Being a mother and CEO of your own company are two very different but equally demanding jobs. I am always trying to find the perfect balance so I can be there and fully present for both. Don’t forget to squeeze in some time for yourself as well 😉
