WHY THO: NIPPLES SORE AF?
YOUR NIPPLES ARE DRIER THAN THE SAHARA. HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Whether you have decided to or are thinking about breastfeeding your baby (no problem if not, btw, #fedisbest!) your nipples are gonna have something to say about it. Oftentimes they’ll be crying, “help me.” We did a little digging while developing our line of beauty products, HATCH Mama, to find out why our nipples get so uncomfortably dry and chafed—and what can be done to stop it.
The skin on our nipples is similar to the skin on our lips. Chapping and chafing is thus par for the course especially when it continually goes from dry to wet. Poor latching or improper positioning can also cause intense nipple pain (call a lactation consult if you think this might be the case).
Let a bit of breastmilk air dry on your nipple after nursing, it has natural antibacterial qualities that may help keep more serious issues at bay, like mastitis or thrush. (Who knew?)
Change those nursing pads frequently and wear a bra made from natural, breathable materials.
Start applying a balm to your nipples before you give birth—this conditions them for what’s to come. Continue using throughout the time you nurse.
LOOK OUT FOR:
Really sharp pains, white patches or extreme discomfort. Call your doctor if these arise.
NEUROTIC THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Will applying balm, or anything for that matter, to our nipples mess with our supply?
According to, well, science, no! Only specific ingredients, when taken internally in very large quantities, have the power to potentially affect your supply. But what will mess you up? Stressing out about it!
